In this article, you can find out how to create your own personal, indistinguishable ringtone in two different ways. For both cases, please do not forget the followings;
- The ringtone play quality is lower than the audio quality, and the output has lower volume than what you were listened while creating it. Try to increase your volume a bit right after finishing up your song/ringtone.
- Don’t make it too long, you have a hard boundary on 40seconds. If your file is longer than 40 seconds, you cannot transfer it to your device.
- If you are not generating your own music/ringtone, do not forget to show respect for the original creators. You can also buy the ringtones directly over the iTunes Store anytime.
- We encourage you to generate your own music/ringtone, be personal, be bold, be brave!
Use GarageBand on MacOS
This method will need a MacBook that has GarageBand installed unless you already have a m4a or m4r file. If you already have a m4a file, you can use start from step 3 with your computer only. Even this method looks a bit more complicated, with this method, you can also use the ringtones you find somewhere else. Also, you can find and download any sound you like with higher quality over the internet, and then use them as an external sound or effect to generate your own. Let’s see the steps:
- Open GarageBand on your MacBook. Create a new project and write your music… Easy said than done on this one, so good luck on your imagination. If you already have an audio music or track you want to use, simply drag and drop that already prepared sound file, and then you can edit them afterwards.
- Once completed, save it as a music file output using Share > Export Song to Disc selection in GarageBand top menu. Save the file as aac file type.
- Open your finder app, find the file you saved, and rename the extension of “m4a” to “m4r”. If you cannot see the extensions in finder, you can enable this following this steps: Once your finder app is open, on your menu on top; press Finder > Preferences, select “Advanced” tab, and select “show all filename and extensions”.
- Now your ringtone file is ready to use. Connect your iPhone to your MacBook (most preferred via USB cable), using the finder app, select your iPhone from the left menu, then select the “music” tab. Open another finder window and drag and drop your m4r extension ringtone file. (Do not expect to see any change or complete message)
- Done! Now on your iPhone, you can select your own personal ringtone under Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone , or Text Tone selections. Your ringtone will appear in top with the same file name you saved.
Use GarageBand on iOS
You only need your phone/tablet that GarageBand app is installed in this method. This makes it easier to complete, but We personally find the other method freer to generate your own music/ringtone. You can see the steps below
- Open GarageBand on your phone, click create a song and start creating your song. You can use Smart instruments and select the notes so you don’t need to record or write a song.
- Once completed, go back to the GarageBand file opening screen by clicking the down arrow from the top left and selecting “My Songs”. Find your song, and Press and hold to open the additional menu. Select the Share button and then select Ringtone. Now you can rename your ringtone and click Export on top right.
- You can click “Use sound as” to set it up immediately, and select “ring tone” , “text tone” or “specific contact” to assign. If you clicked OK and close the menu, you can still change your ringtone over your iPhone settings under Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone , or Text Tone selections. Your ringtone will appear in top with the same file name you saved.
